1971 LAMBRETTA DL200 ELECTRONIC

A Genuine Electronic from the Last Innocenti Production

My last find, a very late production DL200 Electronic model, it just came out the factory the months before closure.

I know I’m repeating myself, but for a long time now, I haven't been looking for anything.

One day, I took my Lambretta DL150 to the usual workshop for its biennial inspection (same as an MOT but every two years); a Sicilian lad had recently started working there as qualified person to carry out the inspections.

He did the job, and once the inspection was finished, he handed the registration document back to me. He mentioned that he liked my Lambretta and had an identical one back in Sicily, although his was yellow.

Ah. Without wanting to sound hypocritical, I told him it was a rare model.

He told me he had restored it years ago, not quite as perfectly as mine, perhaps, but it was in running order. I told him that if he showed it to me, I could tell him what needed doing and help him with the work if he liked. Otherwise, I was open to buying it.

Then silence, but a few months later, he sent me some photos and said he’d sell it to me if we could agree on a price. I made a fair offer; the Lambretta hadn't been restored well, as was evident from the photos, but it was also an electronic, thing however he didn't know as he is not an expert.

For instance, since he couldn't find a headlight reflector, he had replaced the entire handlebars with one from an LI Series 3 model. He had done the same with the side panels, as the originals had gone lost over the years.

We agreed a price, and once I had it in my possession, I stripped it down completely to assess the damage caused by the previous "restoration." Issues included the latch for the plastic petrol flap, which had been cut off to fit a metal one, and the stand support beam; it had been broken and poorly re-welded, so it required complete replacement, a job performed using a frame jig at my old colleagues at Rimini Lambretta Centre.

Fortunately, the engine had not been tampered with and was in perfect condition; currently, the bodywork is awaiting painting, while the engine has already been completely rebuilt.
