Manchester Lyons Scooter Club
Uno dei più antichi e prestigiosi Lambretta Club britannici, protagonista della storia delle competizioni scooteristiche inglesi.

Correva l'anno 1954 quando iniziò l'esistenza del Manchester Lambretta Club, formato inizialmente da quattro persone che si incontravano in un negozio di alimentari. Da queste umili origini il club crebbe e non passò molto tempo per cui ci fu la necessità di trovare una nuova sede più grande, che fu trovata all'Hotel Waterloo a Withington.
Nel 1957 i membri erano arrivati a 55, alcuni dei quali rappresentarono il club nella prima gara all'Isola di Man. Sebbene il club partecipasse ai raduni, erano principalmente eventi tipo i concorsi ad attrarre nuovi membri, in quanto normalmente le persone preferivano tranquille gite domenicali alle scomodit e la confusione dei raduni e potevano cos mostrare i loro trofei.
Nel 1958 all'esibizione del fai da te Manchester Evening News, dove il club aveva uno stand proprio, Ben Lyon e Bebe Daniels (due star televisive americane) chiesero se potevano unirsi al club. Non solo diventarono membri del club, ma accettarono la presidenza onoraria e da quel momento il club acquisì il soprannome di The Lyons.
A questo punto alcuni membri decisero di fondare un club esclusivamente sportivo, eliminando ogni attività sociale. Nacquero così i Mancunians. L'esperienza però durò poco e il gruppo scomparve quasi subito, lasciando i Lyons numericamente ridotti. Rimase però una lezione importante: un club di successo deve mantenere un equilibrio tra attività sportive e vita sociale.
Il 1964 segnò il trasferimento all'Hotel Kingsway. Molti membri storici lasciarono il club, rimanendo soltanto il presidente e il tesoriere, che avevano già dedicato dodici anni alla società. Arrivò una nuova generazione di appassionati e l'età media passò da 30 a 18 anni.
Tra il 1964 e il 1967 il club si rafforzò notevolmente, partecipando sia ad attività sportive sia ai raduni. Norwich fu il primo raduno importante per molti di noi: quindici membri partirono insieme per assistere all evento.
Alla fine del 1967 avevamo acquisito sufficiente esperienza e decidemmo di affrontare seriamente il Campionato 1968. Grazie a un grande impegno riuscimmo a concludere la stagione al 14 posto.
Nel 1969 partimmo ancora più determinati. Nonostante la sfortuna all'Isola di Man e al Tour of Britain, riuscimmo a conquistare il secondo posto nel campionato.
Nei primi anni Settanta, mentre il movimento scooteristico era in declino, il club rimase vivo grazie alle competizioni. I membri correvano sia in categoria Solo sia Sidecar, conquistando numerosi trofei, oltre a organizzare le gare E.M.S.A. sul circuito Three Sisters di Wigan.
All'inizio degli anni Novanta il club iniziò una nuova crescita, tornando ai raduni e aderendo alla Lancashire Alliance. Oggi conta oltre trenta iscritti.
La filosofia del club è sempre stata la stessa:
"Divertirsi ed arrivare ultimi è sempre meglio che vincere e non divertirsi."

Il Manchester Lyons è il più antico Scooter Club inglese ancora esistente, attivo senza interruzioni dal 1954. E' rimasto un Lambretta Club fino al 1999, quando è diventato uno Scooter Club aperto anche ai proprietari di altri scooter.

It was in 1954 that the Manchester Lambretta Club came into existence, with four people meeting in a greengrocer's shop. From this humble beginning the club grew rapidly and it was not long before larger premises were required. The club therefore moved to the Waterloo Hotel in Withington.
By 1957 the membership had reached 55 and several members represented the club in the first Isle of Man 200. Although the club attended rallies, concours events were particularly popular because members preferred relaxed Sunday rides to the bustle of large rally fields while proudly displaying their trophies.
At the 1958 Manchester Evening News Do-It-Yourself Exhibition, where the club had its own stand, American television stars Ben Lyon and Bebe Daniels asked if they could join. They became members and accepted the honorary presidency, giving the club its famous nickname: The Lyons.
Some members later decided to create a purely sporting club by removing all social activities. The Mancunians were born, but the experiment was short-lived. It nevertheless confirmed an important lesson that the Lyons never forgot: a successful club must cater for both sporting and social members.
In 1964 the club moved to the Kingsway Hotel. Most of the older members left, leaving only the chairman and treasurer, who had already served the club for twelve years. A wave of younger members arrived and the average age dropped from 30 to 18.
Between 1964 and 1967 the club became increasingly active in both sporting and social activities. Norwich was the first rally for many of us, with fifteen members travelling together.
By the end of 1967 we had gained enough experience to mount a serious challenge in the 1968 Championship, eventually finishing the season in 14th place.
In 1969 we started with much more experience and determination. Despite considerable misfortune in the Isle of Man and the Tour of Britain, we finished second in the Championship.
By the early 1970s scootering was in decline, but racing kept the club alive. Members competed successfully in Solo and Sidecar racing, winning many trophies and organising E.M.S.A. meetings at the Three Sisters circuit in Wigan.
During the early 1990s the club began to grow once again, attending rallies and joining the Lancashire Alliance. Today it has more than thirty members.

The Manchester Lyons are the oldest continuously running scooter club in England, active since 1954 without interruption. They remained a Lambretta Club until 1999, when they became a general Scooter Club welcoming owners of all scooter makes.
