2023 HUB CLUB TOUR - LAKE GARDA

Desenzano del Garda • Italy

ITALIANO

ENGLISH

With the previous Hub Club Tour in mind, where we didn't cover much mileage, we decided to take a classic route this year: Lake Garda.

To be honest, the idea intrigued me, partly because back in my youth, 1985 to be precise, together with some friends from Rimini I had planned to attend a rally at the lake, though I couldn't make it in the end, likely due to a lack of funds.

I set off on the scheduled day to meet the group at ‘La Rotonda sul pane’ in San Giovanni in Persiceto. Marco arrived in a van carrying the Lambrettas for our British friends, who flew into Bologna airport and took a taxi straight to the meeting point. Once the scooters were unloaded and all the participants had arrived, we set off for the lake.

It was a delightful, sunny September day, and we stopped for lunch at an open-air tavern in the Emilian countryside. The atmosphere was fantastic, and everyone was in high spirits. We enjoyed a relaxed ride and arrived at our booked hotel just in time for a refreshing dip in the pool.

The next day, we set out to tour the area around the lake; it was 150 kilometers of pure wonder, featuring an incredible highlight: the ‘Strada della Forra.’ This narrow, winding road climbs steeply, carved directly into the rock face, leading to a spot with a breathtaking view of the lake.

On the second day, we took a different route; passing through the stunningly beautiful Valeggio sul Mincio, we then reached another lovely town that deserves far more recognition than it gets; Mantua. The city of the Gonzaga family, which attained a splendor still clearly visible today during the Renaissance, hosted us for an excellent lunch in the town square. The weather remained glorious; it was warm, but not excessively so. It was perfect for wandering through our country’s beautiful landscapes on the Lambretta.

On the third day, we took a mountain road that climbs above the lake towards Trento, another driving experience amidst stunning scenery that can be fully savored at the Lambretta’s pace. The following day, I head home alone due to work commitments, while the others stayed on for another day. The journey home was quick and pleasant, though at one point I unfortunately lost the Lambretta’s original keys; while this didn't affect the ride itself, it was something that really annoyed me.
