ENGLISH

At the tenth edition of the ‘Giro dei Tre Mari’ in its new version, in 2014, since I was the person who brought Lambrettas to the event, the organizers contacted me to say I couldn’t miss it.

The event had indeed grown considerably successful over the years and had seen the participation of many Lambretta teams, quite a few coming from abroad. So, rather reluctantly, I decided to be part of the game together with my former colleagues from Rimini Lambretta.

It was actually also the first substantial tour I had done since the Euro Jamboree in Spain. Again, I used the Lambretta DL125 in the sporty version, which was very well received.

My team was made up of some old friends from Southend John and Jay plus Ann and Andy. All very dear old acquaintances. Jay was attending his last European event since he was about to move with his family to Australia; it wasn’t a particularly lucky rally for him because the Lambretta gave some trouble and, moreover, on a twisty downhill, he slipped on an oil patch on the tarmac, ruining the freshly restored paint. At that point, to avoid spoiling his vacation, he loaded it onto the following van and continued having fun anyway. His choice to move and change life struck me deeply as I had wanted to do the same after leaving my company.

The last part of the first riding day was tackled descending towards the sea on a freeway, after crossing the mountains accompanied by pouring rain. Inside my helmet, I cursed myself for having been convinced to take part in the event, when I had promised myself not to live through situations like that again.

The second day did not start under the best auspices either: dark black clouds followed or preceded us and we often traveled on rough roads flooded by sudden downpours. However, from the next day the sun came back out and my mood changed accordingly, making the day, when we rode around the entire perimeter of the heel of Puglia, wonderful.

Since for the day we started and returned to the same hotel, some English riders chose to stay by the poolside and when we arrived back to the hotel in the late afternoon, we found out they had spent the whole day drinking beer. Some of them were absolutely hammered. Fortunately, the situation remained sunny over the last two days; the return journey left me with many good memories and the desire to start again.

It wasn’t a given.
