2025 ISOLA D'ELBA

Isola d'Elba • Italy

ITALIANO

ENGLISH

We decided to return to the Island of Elba again this year. Since it is the first major rally since the end of winter, the urge to travel always makes itself felt.

The group consists of myself, Thomas, Cosimo and Roberto as last year, joined this time by young Daniele, who tackled the journey on a fast and reliable Vespa 50. Everyone is welcome in our group. I rode my old faithful Lambretta SX200, a machine that hadn't hit the open road for long and, I realized, had never actually accompanied me to an Elba rally before. It had been there a couple of times, but always in the hands of friends. I also decided that, after so many years of unfailing service, I would completely strip it down, clean it, and give it a proper overhaul once the trip was over.

As usual, we set off a day before the rally to enjoy the island for an extra day and avoid the ferry chaos. It is a glorious day; compared to the previous year's trip, the difference is night and day; sunshine and perfect temperatures. Our lunch stop just outside Siena is an experience worth repeating.

We arrive on the island while the sun is still high, and the weather here is glorious too. The following day, we make sure to take our customary tour of the island; for a change, we ride the route in reverse, stopping for a meal at Sant'Andrea and taking group photos at scenic viewpoints along the coastal road, one of the most beautiful drives in Italy.

The return journey is smooth and fast; Cosimo, riding his 'farobasso' Vespa equipped with a performance kit, speeds along ahead of us as the kilometers fly by. We are also accompanied on the way back by a rider local to us on a Vespa ET3; at one point, a nut on his exhaust comes loose. After some struggle, we manage to get the Vespa running safely again, and we finally reach our destination for a farewell aperitif.

Thomas and I are already planning something epic for next year, so we know we won't be attending the Elba rally, though it remains a wonderful event for vintage scooter enthusiasts.
