The Lambretta Twenty Years Ahead of Its Time
The Lui has always divided opinions. For me it became fascinating only when I finally decided to restore one and discover just how advanced its design really was.

Ho avuto diversi Lui nella mia vita, sia 50 cc che 75 cc, addirittura un 75 inglese con un passato sportivo.
Tuttavia non mi ero mai lasciato coinvolgere e ho sempre finito con il venderli.
Alla fine ho capito il motivo: non ci avevo mai messo le mani. Non ne avevo mai restaurato uno e nemmeno eseguito una vera manutenzione.
Durante l'estate del **2019** ho trovato questo Lui in condizioni sufficientemente buone da convincermi a non riverniciarlo.
Perché a me i Lui piacciono esclusivamente conservati.
Lo smontaggio è iniziato durante l'inverno e, nel frattempo, ho recuperato tutti i componenti necessari per realizzare esattamente l'idea che avevo in mente.
Lavorandoci sopra ho scoperto che il Lui è, in realtà, uno scooter assolutamente geniale.
Oltre ad avere una linea che sembra arrivare da almeno vent'anni nel futuro, anche dal punto di vista meccanico e ciclistico è incredibilmente semplice, con soluzioni progettate per ridurre i costi di produzione ma allo stesso tempo estremamente innovative.
Basta pensare alla totale intercambiabilità dei componenti del motore con quelli dei Lui 75 e delle sorelle J50, J100 e J125.
- Alberi motore.
- Cambi.
- Frizioni.
- Volani e statori.
- Marmitte.
- Tutto completamente intercambiabile.
L'idea del restauro è stata quindi quella di costruire il Lui che Innocenti avrebbe potuto realizzare come evoluzione naturale del progetto.
La domanda era semplice: "Come sarebbe stato il Lui se avesse avuto un successo mondiale?"
Ho terminato il restauro solamente all'inizio dell'inverno **2020**.
Ho potuto provarlo soltanto in qualche giro sulle colline e il giudizio definitivo è stato rimandato al 2021.
Per quello che ho potuto verificare, però, il risultato è stato uno solo.

I've owned several Lui models over the years, both 50 cc and 75 cc versions, including an English Lui 75 with an interesting racing history.
Despite that, I never really fell in love with them and always ended up selling them.
Eventually I understood why: I had never actually worked on one. I had never restored or even properly serviced a Lui.
During the summer of **2019** I found this scooter in good enough condition that I decided not to repaint it.
I only like preserved Lui scooters.
I began dismantling it during the winter while collecting all the parts needed for the project I had in mind.
Working on it made me realise just how clever the Lui really is.
Its styling looks at least twenty years ahead of its time, while mechanically and structurally it is incredibly simple, using innovative engineering solutions designed to reduce manufacturing costs.
Just think about the total interchangeability of engine components between the Lui 50, Lui 75 and the J50, J100 and J125 models.
- Crankshafts.
- Gearboxes.
- Clutches.
- Flywheels and stators.
- Exhaust systems.
- Everything is interchangeable.
My restoration idea was therefore to build the Lui that Innocenti might have produced as the natural evolution of the project.
The concept was simple: "What would the Lui have become if it had achieved worldwide success?"
The restoration was completed only at the beginning of **winter 2020**.
I managed only a few rides through the surrounding hills before winter arrived, so the final verdict had to wait until 2021.
From those first rides, however, one conclusion was already obvious.
It's pure fun to ride.
The Evolution of the Lui
Rather than restoring this scooter exactly as Innocenti built it, the project became an exercise in imagining how the Lui could have evolved if production had continued beyond the early 1970s.
The result is a preserved scooter with period modifications that remain faithful to Innocenti engineering and philosophy.
