MY LAMBRETTA STORY

More than forty years of passion, friendship and Lambrettas.

A Passion That Started With Quadrophenia

Sometimes life changes because of something completely unexpected. A missed appointment in 1980 became the beginning of a lifelong passion for Lambrettas, scooter culture and the friendships that grew around them throughout Europe.

Rimini — Early Mod years, 1980s.

My first Lambretta
My first Lambretta Li 125 Series 3 — 1982.

ENGLISH

My history with Lambrettas starts one autumn evening in 1980. One of those evenings when a missed appointment with a young lady unexpectedly changes your life forever.

She never arrived, and after waiting for a while I joined my friends at the local cinema where they were showing Quadrophenia. Needless to say, when I walked out of the cinema my life would never be the same again.

My first Lambretta arrived in 1982: a Li 125 Series 3, which I still own today. I swapped it for my faithful Piaggio Si moped that had carried me everywhere during the previous two years.

In 1985 it received the famous Paganelli conversion. He was a local mechanic who specialised in machining 200 cc cylinders to fit into smaller-capacity engine casings, a very popular modification in those days.

The real earthquake came in 1986, when helmet legislation became compulsory in Italy. Many riders who loved the feeling of the wind in their hair stopped using scooters and motorcycles, and suddenly countless Lambrettas became available at bargain prices.

That was when I visited the funny old man who used to ride around town on his beautiful Lambretta 200 Special — the dream machine for every young Italian Mod. A few lire later, it became part of my garage, where it still remains today.

Space was already limited, but one Lambretta led to another. Some stayed with me forever, while others eventually found a new home.

By the end of the 1980s my Mod enthusiasm gradually evolved into a passion for collecting and restoring original Lambrettas.

Back in 1984 I met Frans Hollander, for many years President of Lambretta Club Nederland. More than a mentor, he became a true friend. Every summer he spent his holidays on the Adriatic coast in Italy, and I will always remember those afternoons outside his caravan, talking for hours about Lambrettas, restoration projects and future ideas over a cold beer.

In 1989 I witnessed the beginning of a new Lambretta era, when enthusiasts from all over Europe — and later from many other parts of the world — started meeting again every year in a different country.

It was there that I met Cesare Battaglini, a man who needs no introduction, with whom I shared wonderful journeys and unforgettable adventures.

My desire to learn more has always brought me into contact with Lambretta enthusiasts around the world. Through one of these friendships I discovered the fascinating world of historic scooter racing.

I became friends with Eddie Yates, the historical memory of the Manchester Lyons Scooter Club, one of Britain's clubs most deeply involved in scooter racing.

We travelled together to the Isle of Man more than once and met regularly both in Italy and in England.

During those years I began collecting photographs, videos, magazines and historical documents about Lambretta racing. Part of that archive has been shared on this website since the very beginning of the Internet, in the year 2000.

I'd like to think that Racing Lambrettas has helped keep alive the memory of the legendary manufacturers, tuners, riders and style creators who shaped the golden age of Lambretta culture.

Thank you for your support throughout the years, and enjoy your visit.
