The Legendary Druidale
The Druidale Time Trial was one of the highlights of the Isle of Man Scooter Week, a race that became legendary among Lambretta and Vespa riders during the golden years of scooter sport.

Uno dei più importanti eventi nella storia dello scooterismo sportivo è senza dubbio la Settimana dello Scooter all'Isola di Man. È stato proprio grazie ad un vecchio filmato di questa manifestazione che nacque il mio interesse per la storia delle competizioni scooteristiche.
Fra le numerose prove di una settimana interamente dedicata alle gare, una delle più attese e spettacolari era sicuramente il Druidale.
Il percorso si snodava lungo una stretta strada di campagna disseminata di griglie per il bestiame, cancelli e soprattutto dal celebre attraversamento di un guado, diventato l'immagine simbolo della Scooter Week.
Per ottenere il miglior tempo era necessario affrontare tutto il percorso alla massima velocità possibile, compreso il guado, attraversato senza rallentare.
Nel 2003, durante il raduno organizzato per il cinquantesimo anniversario del Lambretta Club Great Britain, ho avuto la fortuna di percorrere il Druidale accompagnato da due protagonisti di quegli anni, John Ronald e Norrie Kerr.
È stato uno dei momenti più emozionanti della mia vita scooteristica.
Arrivati al termine del percorso, John guardò l'orologio montato sul suo scooter e disse sorridendo:
«Abbiamo impiegato dieci minuti per arrivare qui... normalmente ce ne mettevamo sei!»
Io avevo avuto la sensazione di stare volando. Evidentemente mi sbagliavo.

One of the most important events in the history of scooter sport is undoubtedly the Isle of Man Scooter Week. It was through an old film of this incredible event that my interest in historical scooter racing first began.
Among an entire week of competitions, one of the most anticipated and spectacular events was undoubtedly the Druidale.
The course followed a narrow country road featuring cattle grids, farm gates and, above all, the famous water splash that became one of the iconic images of the Scooter Week.
The objective was simple: complete the course in the shortest possible time, which meant riding absolutely flat out from start to finish, including the water crossing.
In 2003, during the Lambretta Club Great Britain's 50th Anniversary Rally, I had the privilege of riding the Druidale together with two riders who had competed there during its golden years: John Ronald and Norrie Kerr.
It remains one of the most memorable rides of my life.
When we reached the finish, John looked at the clock fitted to his scooter and said:
"It took us ten minutes to get here... we usually did it in six!"
I genuinely believed we had been flying. I couldn't have been more wrong.
